A pair of clubs in desperate need of wins to haul themselves back into the playoff reckoning meet on Saturday evening when the San Jose Earthquakes take on Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Buck Shaw Stadium. The teams are tied in the Western Conference on 37 points, both five points out of the top five and the postseason positions. The Quakes extended their home winning streak last weekend in a 1-0 win against Philadelphia Union; Whitecaps FC saw their winless streak stretched to four games in a 3-1 loss at FC Dallas.

Camilo Sanvezzo and Kenny Miller scored second-half goals to lead Whitecaps FC to a 2-0 win Aug. 10 at BC Place; San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski and Vancouver’s Corey Hertzog traded goals as the teams ended in a 1-1 draw April 6 at Buck Shaw Stadium.

- Whitecaps FC finally took the lead on the hour. Nigel Reo-Coker made a lung-busting run from his own half before sliding the ball forward into the area where Camilo slid ahead of defender Steven Beitashour to poke home inside the left post.
- The lead was doubled in the 74th minute. Russell Teibert slipped a neat ball into the box and Reo-Coker all but whiffed as the ball went past, allowing Kenny Miller to step into space and drive a right-footed effort to the back of the net.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES
The San Jose Earthquakes returned home and won a sixth consecutive match on their own ground, defeating Philadelphia Union 1-0 on Sunday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes are in a tie for seventh place in the Western Conference with 37 points from 28 matches.
LAST MATCH
- The game's lone goal came in the 15th minute. Sam Cronin played a beautiful chip from just past midfield to Shea Salinas, who made a well-timed run into the box and found himself all alone after a defender fell down. He took one touch and volleyed it past Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath.
- The game took a dramatic turn near the hour mark when Rafael Baca was sent off by referee Fotis Bazakos with a second yellow card after going in hard on Union striker Conor Casey on a 50-50 ball, but the Quakes held out over the final stanza.
- Quakes interim head coach Mark Watson made three changes to the team that fell 3-0 to the LA Galaxy at StubHub Center. Justin Morrow, Rafael Baca and Shea Salinas all came into the team, in place of Steven Lenhart and international campaigners Clarence Goodson and Marvin Chavez.

- The Earthquakes won for a sixth consecutive home game. It’s the club’s longest home winning streak since winning 12 in a row over the end of the 2001 season and the start of 2002.
- “At home, you are in familiar surroundings; you don’t have any travel and when you combine that with great fans, you can get some wins,” said Earthquakes interim head coach Mark Watson. “We know that we will have to get some points on the road in this final stretch though if we want to get into the playoffs.”
- After the visit by Vancouver, the Quakes hit the road for three of their next four matches; they are currently riding a six-game winless run on their travels, dating back to June 22.
- “I would like an easier 3-0 victory with no issues at the end,” Watson said. “We’ve been in a playoff situation for a while. We’ve had so many games where we really needed the points to stay close enough to the pack. I think our guys have embraced that mentality and I’ve been really proud of them.”
- Said midfielder Sam Cronin: “Heading down the stretch when games are more difficult and teams are more organized, we’re going to have to get shutouts to win games. There’s no reason to think we can’t keep pushing and not worry about how it looks.”
- After missing just his second league match of the season, Rafael Baca returned to the Quakes midfield. But he will miss the Vancouver match after being sent off a little more than a half-hour from the end of the match.
- Shea Salinas made his first start since Aug. 10 and netted his second goal of the season, his first coming June 29 in the win vs. LA.
- “Shea [Salinas] looked good tonight. He has had a couple of games as a sub coming off of his injury and he played well in our recent Reserve League game” Watson said. “He had his pace tonight and he was dangerous throughout the match. He also had a great finish for the goal.”
- There was a late forced change in the Quakes back four when Clarence Goodson was called into the U.S. national team for the World Cup qualifying match vs. Mexico, and Justin Morrow started in central defense.
- “As a team, we ran a whole lot tonight,” said Salinas. “Jason [Hernandez] was awesome in the back alongside Justin [Morrow]. [Jon] Busch was great as well. It was a great defensive effort and it always feels great to keep a clean sheet.”
VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC
Vancouver Whitecaps FC had their winless streak extended to four matches, falling 3-1 to FC Dallas on Saturday evening in Frisco. Whitecaps FC are in a tie for seventh place in the Western Conference with 37 points from 27 matches.
LAST MATCH
- Vancouver opened the scoring after just four minutes. A beautiful passing sequence between Camilo and Kenny Miller saw Miller released into open space on the right side, and he sent in a cross that onrushing midfielder Daigo Kobayashi deftly volleyed past Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz.
- But FC Dallas pulled level just four minutes later. Fabian Castillo found midfielder Je-Vaughn Watson all alone on the left side, and after two quick touches he blasted a right-footed shot from 20 yards that flew straight into the upper corner of the net at goalkeeper David Ousted’s near post.
- FC Dallas claimed the full three points thanks to two late goals. Substitute Mauro Diaz scored what would be the game-winner in the 87th minute when he volleyed a Fabian Castillo cross with serious power past a helpless Ousted.
- Two minutes later FCD defender Jair Benitez scored an audacious goal, a blast from just inside the halfway line that sailed over the head of Ousted and under the crossbar.
- Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie made three changes to the team that came back for a 2-2 draw with Chivas USA at BC Place. Nigel Reo-Coker, Carlyle Mitchell and Daigo Kobayashi came into the team, for Lee Young-Pyo, Russell Teibert and Kekuta Manneh.

- Whitecaps FC saw their winless streak extended to four games in the loss at FC Dallas, their third defeat in that run. It’s their longest winless run in league play since going 0-4-3 from March 23-May 4.
- “Obviously it was a shocker,” Vancouver head coach Martin Rennie said. “It shows you how cruel the game can be. We started off the game really well and got an excellent goal. But at the end of the day, Dallas scored three incredible goals on the night and that’s disappointing for us because I think that if you look at overall performance, we played well. They had three shots on target and they had three goals. They were unbelievable goals against us so it’s disappointing but there is a lot we can take from it. I don’t think it was a poor performance. It was a good performance.”
- Following the 3-1 win vs. Chicago on July 14, Whitecaps FC were sitting in third place in the Western Conference. They have just one win in their last eight matches and are now in seventh place in the West, five points out of the final playoff position.
- “We’ve got to climb to get up there, but I still feel like we’ll get there. We’ve been here before. It was a tough struggle to get there last year and it will be this year,” Rennie said. “It’s very close. There are a lot of games left to play, seven games, lots of points to play for. … We need to do well in the next couple of games but I don’t think that hurts our confidence. It is something we have to get over quickly.”
- The Whitecaps are also winless in their last five matches away from BC Place, dating back to July 3. They are on the second game of a three-game road swing with the visit to San Jose; four of their next six games are on the road.
- “We need to win on the road,” said goalkeeper David Ousted. “We have two away games next and we need to get at least one win. It was tough (vs. Dallas). We deserved more than we got.”
- Daigo Kobayashi scored his second goal of the season – his first since netting in the second game of the season on March 9. It was his first start in four matches.
- “We had a couple of decent chances, it was just that in the final third when we were breaking out, we didn’t put that final pass together well enough. That was a disappointment,” Rennie said. “We had a couple of half chances we didn’t make the most of, but we felt really comfortable in the game. In the second half I don’t think we had any shots on goal. I don’t think there were even any dangerous chances.”
- Nigel Reo-Coker returned to a right back role in place of Lee Young-Pyo, with Johnny Leveron moving forward into a holding midfield position after featuring in central defense in each of his previous starts.
- “Ninety percent of football is about using your brain,” Nigel Reo-Coker said. “For us, we’re not used to this heat and humidity. That’s not an excuse, so we have to come with a game plan. We have to be compact, tight and difficult to beat on the counterattack.”
