On Wednesday morning, the ‘Caps along with hundreds of volunteers, handed out newspapers in exchange for donations in support of the annual Raise-a-Reader day. Keeper David Ousted, defender Greg Klazura, and midfielder Gershon Koffie were on the corner of Burrard and Georgia bright and early to raise money, take photos, and sign autographs for supporters. Whitecaps FC president Bob Lenarduzzi, club ambassador Carl Valentine, and ‘Caps mascot, Spike, were also on hand in support of the campaign.
Over the course of the morning the ‘Caps were visited by the Vancouver Police, the BC Lions, Fin and many other influential members of the community who came together to raise donations for this amazing cause. After some friendly competition and strategic selling skills, the day wrapped up as a huge success.
Whitecaps FC would like to thank their fans for coming out to not only meet a couple of their favourite players, but also to help raise literacy awareness and funding for family and children’s literacy programs in British Columbia. The Vancouver Sun Raise-a-Reader program has fundraised nearly $6.9 million since its inception in 1997 and continues to raise awareness and funds for literacy today.
