Three Whitecaps FC Girls Elite players called up to Women's National Excel Camp

Three Vancouver Whitecaps FC Girls Elite players have been called-up for a two-week long camp in preparation for the CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship, set to be held this October in Jamaica. 27 promising U-14 to U-16 female players were named to the camp being held in Burnaby, BC from September 28 to October 6. All three players also took part in the previous national excel camp in August.

Named to the roster are Girls Elite defender Rachel Jones and midfielders Jenna Baxter and Simmrin Dhaliwal. Prior to joining the Girls Elite program, all three players developed through the BC Soccer Provincial Development Program and the National Training Centre and played in the EA SPORTS BC Soccer Premier League. Baxter most recently joined the program from Surrey United SC, while Jones and Dhaliwal enter their second seasons with Whitecaps FC after coming from Mountain United.

Once again for this camp Beverly Priestman opted to inject inspiration and leadership from Canada’s Women’s National Team inviting veteran defender and Whitecaps FC women's alum Candace Chapman to act as Technical Assistant. Chapman, who appeared in 114 International “A” matches for Canada, was selected on the Canadian Soccer Association’s Centennial Celebration All-Time Canada XI women’s team in 2012 and part of the London Olympic Bronze Medallist team.

All 27 players were part of Priestman’s first camp as Canada’s Women’s Excel Program (U-14/U-17) Director this past August. They will look to secure a spot in the Canadian squad that will compete in the CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship in Jamaica this October, a FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifying event.
