Canada opens U-20 World Cup qualifying campaign with convincing 3-1 win over Haiti

Canada cruised to a 3-1 win over Haiti Saturday in their first match of the 2015 U-20 CONCACAF Championship – a tournament that serves as the region’s qualifiers for the upcoming U-20 World Cup.


Striker Jordan Hamilton got Canada on the board early with a pair of goals in the 11th and 18th minutes. Vancouver Whitecaps FC fullback Sam Adekugbe, making his official Canada debut, picked up the assist on Hamilton’s second tally with a cross from the left flank.

Haiti got one back in the 27th minute, but after Whitecaps FC midfielder Marco Bustos drew a penalty Michael Petrasso converted from the spot in the 70th minute to seal the victory.  

Canada’s next match is Monday vs. Mexico at 12 p.m. PT.

- Sam Adekugbe:
Started and played the full 90 minutes. Set up Hamilton’s second goal with a perfect cross from the left flank.
- Marco Bustos: Started and played the full 90 minutes. Drew a penalty, which Petrasso converted, hit the post and was named the Man of the Match.
- Marco Carducci: Started, played the full 90 minutes, and earned the victory. Made a key save in the 34th minute to keep Canada ahead 2-1.
- Alex Comsia: Started and played the full 90 minutes at centre back.
- Kianz Froese: Started and played 82 minutes in a holding midfield position.
