VANCOUVER, BC – Still thinking about Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s weekend win over Chicago Fire? Us too. So we’ve decided to delve into it a little further.

On that note, here are a few interesting numbers behind Vancouver’s first win of the season.

6

Octavio Rivero completed six out of seven attempted “dribbles,” which was a league high on the weekend. To put that number in perspective, FC Dallas winger Fabian Castillo led the league with an average of 4.19 completed dribbles per game last season. Opta defines a completed dribble as a successful attempt by a player to beat a defender in a one-on-one situation while retaining possession. Check out the graphic below to see where Rivero’s dribbles took place.

This number is relevant for a few different reasons. First of all, Rivero and Kekuta Manneh created a game-high four chances apiece on the weekend (defined as a pass/cross instrumental in creating a goal-scoring opportunity). More on that here. Also of note, Whitecaps FC goalkeeper David Ousted made four saves to earn his first clean sheet of the season. The graphic below illustrates the chance-creating passes Rivero and Manneh made on the night.

Whitecaps FC launched a whopping 18 shots towards goal against the Fire. That would have been their third highest total away from home last season. Rivero led the way with eight shots, which was a league-high on the weekend. Check out the shot chart below (courtesy of the ‘Caps App).

Making his third professional start, Canadian left back Sam Adekugbe had a game-high three blocks (which was also the highest individual total in MLS this past weekend). For his efforts, Adekugbe was named to the MLS Team of the Week. As you can see below, two of Adekugbe's blocks were highlighted in MLSsoccer.com's Plays of the Night.
