VANCOUVER, BC – The stage is set.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC will meet North American Soccer League side FC Edmonton in the semifinal of the 2015 Amway Canadian Championship.
The Eddies secured their semifinal birth on Wednesday night, defeating Ottawa Fury FC 3-1 (6-2 on aggregate) in the decisive second leg of the preliminary round.
As a result, they move on to the semifinal to face the first-seeded ‘Caps. The first leg will take place next Wednesday, May 6 in Edmonton (7 p.m. PT kickoff at Clarke Field - Sportsnet 360 and Sportsnet World) and Whitecaps FC will host the second leg the following Wednesday, May 13 at BC Place.
Kickoff for the home match is set for 7 p.m. PT and tickets are still available. Note that Amway Canadian Championship tickets are included in Whitecaps FC Season Ticket packages.
The winner of the Western Canadian semifinal will meet either Toronto FC or Montreal Impact in the two-leg final on August 12 and August 26.
In addition to claiming the Voyageurs Cup, the 2015 Canadian champion will earn Canada’s lone entry into the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) – an annual 24-team competition between the top clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.
Montreal Impact, who won last year’s Canadian Championship, represented Canada in the most recent CCL and made it all the way to the final before falling to Club América on Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 61,004 at the Olympic Stadium.
Whitecaps FC have never won the Canadian Championship.
NOTE: Since the 2015 Amway Canadian Championship won't conclude until August (as a result of scheduling conflicts with the FIFA Women's World Cup), it was agreed that the top Canadian MLS team in league play last season would represent Canada in the 2015-16 CCL, which is set to begin in August as well. Whitecaps FC earned that right by accumulating 50 points. Moving forward, the winner of the Canadian Championship will compete in the following year's CCL.
