Russell Teibert called up to Canadian national team for upcoming World Cup qualifiers vs. Dominica

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC confirmed today that midfielder Russell Teibert has been called up to the Canadian national team for their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers versus Dominica this month.

Head coach Benito Floro and The Reds hold camp from June 7 to 17, convening in Orlando, Florida before travelling to Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica for the first fixture on June 11. BMO Field in Toronto will be the site for the second leg of the home-and-away series with the Caribbean outfit on June 16.

Teibert will join Canada following Whitecaps FC’s June 6 match vs. LA Galaxy and return on June 17.

The home-and-away series kicks off a busy summer for the team as the FIFA World Cup qualifiers will lead into July’s 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Should Canada win the series against Dominica, they’ll go into the draw for the third and fourth rounds of qualifying. The draw for those rounds takes place on July 25, 2015, and would see another home-and-away series in the third round in September before entering the fourth round in a four-team round robin competition that would start in November.

“With qualifying starting, our objective now is to win games,” Floro said in a release. “So my objectives are always the same: win the games playing our style. This summer, we want to qualify for the next FIFA World Cup qualifying stage, we want to win the CONCACAF Gold Cup, and we want to qualify for the Olympics, which is very important for Canada Soccer as the Olympic team will look to form the base of the national team in the future.”

Teibert, 22, was last included in Floro's squad that defeated Puerto Rico 3-0 and Guatemala 1-0 in a pair of friendlies back in March. The Niagara Falls, Ontario native appeared as a sub in both matches.

In total, Teibert has earned 12 caps with the senior men's national team. The two-time Canadian U-17 Player of the Year has also represented Canada at the U-23, U-20, and U-17 levels

This season, the Whitecaps FC Residency graduate has appeared in 11 MLS matches, starting in nine of them. He recorded an assist in the 1-0 win at Real Salt Lake on April 18.
