Month-in-Review: August

Group shot celebrating Voyageurs Cup

VANCOUVER, BC – What a month. With eight matches across three competitions it was a busy August for the ‘Caps, not to mention a memorable one after the team’s historic Amway Canadian Championship victory at BC Place.

Here are some of the highlights from the past 31 days.

BEST GOAL

There have been some truly memorable strikes from Carl Robinson’s squad this month. From Techera’s cheeky back heel against FC Dallas to Scooter’s stunner against Sporting Kansas City; and who can forget El Capitano’s highlight reel of phenomenal free kicks.

But for my money, this month’s most memorable moment comes from the August 1st match against arch-rivals Seattle when Pa-Modou Kah notched his second strike of the night with a deft flick of the boot. We’re of course more used to seeing the centre back doing the gritty work at the other end of the pitch, but with three goals in the month of August alone it’s about time we started to appreciate his offensive contributions as well.

CANADIAN DIRECT INSURANCE SAVE OF THE MONTH

With four clean sheets in eight matches, it’s been a pretty good month for keeper David Ousted. As usual the man between the sticks has come up with a string of impressive saves, but the Great Dane’s stop to thwart Fabian Castillo during the FC Dallas match caught my eye, purely because of the importance to the game as a whole.

BEST ASSIST

While an honorary mention should be reserved for Jordan Harvey’s slide rule pass for Cristian Techera during the 4-0 thumping of Real Salt Lake; it’s hard not to tip the ‘Best Assist’ cap in the direction of young gun Kianz Froese. The Canadian was lively throughout Whitecaps FC’s first leg tie at Montreal Impact and his assist for Darren Mattocks’ opener was the perfect encapsulation of his energetic performance as he fought off his marker before laying it on a plate for the Jamaican striker.

BEST CELEBRATION

No contest here.

The scenes after the final whistle during last week’s Voyageurs Cup win will live long in the memory for 'Caps fans, who made up for years of heartbreak with one heck of a party at BC Place.

BIG PICTURE
The 'Caps posted an impressive 4W-2L-2D record across all competitions during August, picking up nine from a possible 15 points in the league along the way. At the start of the month many people were touting August as an important test for the boys in Blue and White, and judging by the results it looks as though Carl Robinson’s team passed with flying colours.

As well as their Voyageurs Cup win, a win and a draw against Seattle helped the ‘Caps to put themselves in good positions in both the Cascadia Cup and Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League group stage. Their MLS exploits also mean the 'Caps currently sit second in the Western Conference standings, just one point behind the league-leading LA Galaxy with a game in hand.
