Whitecaps FC pass in 2015 MLS Waiver Draft; Azira goes to Colorado Rapids

Michael Azira

The lone player selected in Wednesday’s MLS Waiver Draft was Ugandan midfielder Micheal Azira, who went second overall to Colorado Rapids.

Azira spent the last two seasons with Seattle Sounders FC.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC, who had the 16th overall pick, passed.

Prior to the Waiver Draft, Whitecaps FC confirmed the club was unable to come to terms on a new agreement with defender Ethen Sampson. Should Sampson choose to continue his career within MLS, Vancouver will have the right of first refusal.

The remaining players who were eligible for the Waiver Draft, including Caleb Clarke, Robert Earnshaw, and Andre Lewis, are now available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

An additional 60 players, including Steven Beitashour, Pa-Modou Kah, Mauro Rosales, and Paolo Tornaghi, will be eligible for the MLS Re-Entry Draft. Stage One is set for Friday at 12 p.m. PT.

Clubs have until Thursday at 2 p.m. PT to re-sign or trade their Re-Entry Draft eligible players.
