Waston scores first international goal for Costa Rica in 1-0 win over Nicaragua

Waston goal Costa Rica

This “offseason” just keeps getting better and better for Kendall Waston.

On November 17, Waston picked up an assist for Costa Rica in a 2-1 win over Panama in World Cup qualifying. Two days later, the 2015 Whitecaps FC BMO Player of the Yearsigned a multi-year contract extension with the ‘Caps.

Later in the month, he was named to the 2015 MLS Best XI.

And on Tuesday night in Liberia, Costa Rica, Waston scored his first international goal for the Ticos in a 1-0 win over Nicaragua. The 6-foot-5 centre back opened his account in the 59th minute, soaring over the Nicaragua goalkeeper and defender to head in a corner.

Waston started and played the full 90 minutes in Tuesday’s friendly – as did Whitecaps FC defender Jordan Smith, who made his second appearance for Costa Rica’s senior national team.

This was Waston’s fifth appearance for the senior team and third this year.

In those three games, Waston has a goal and an assist and Costa Rica has conceded just one goal while posting a 2W-0L-1D record.
