Stars collide: Morales meets reigning NBA MVP Stephen Curry in Portland

PORTLAND, OR – Pedro Morales felt like a little kid on Friday in Portland.

The ‘Caps captain bumped into reigning NBA MVP Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, who are staying at the same hotel as Vancouver Whitecaps FC in downtown Portland, and he couldn’t contain his excitement.

“It’s amazing,” said Morales, who has 16 goals and 16 assists over two years in MLS. “I never feel like this in football. I’ve played against Ronaldo and Messi and it’s normal. Now it’s something different. When you watch him on TV ... good player, good person."

Morales said basketball isn’t that big in his native Chile, but last year he started watching and became a fan of the defending champion Warriors – and in particular Curry.

“I think he’s the best,” Morales said. “Like Messi in football.”

Curry and the Warriors are in town to face the Portland Trailblazers tonight – Morales was planning to attend the game with a few teammates.

It will be his first basketball game.

“I’m excited,” Morales said.

He’s also excited for the upcoming season.

After opening the preseason with three straight wins in Tucson, Arizona, Whitecaps FC will play three more matches over the next week as part of Portland’s Simple Invitational. The annual preseason tournament will serve as a final tune-up before the ‘Caps open the regular season on March 6 against Montreal Impact (2:30 p.m. PT at BC Place).
