Three things from Week 6 in MLS: A 'horror tackle,' wonder goal, and more

Nigel De Jong tackle on Nagbe

There was no shortage of drama in Week 6 of the 2016 MLS season.

Here are three things that stood out to me.

‘HORROR TACKLE’ SHELVES PORTLAND’S NAGBE

It was the tackle that had everyone talking.

In the 73rd minute of Sunday’s match between LA Galaxy and Portland Timbers, Galaxy midfielder Nigel de Jong was shown a yellow card for what has been described by many as a “horror tackle” on Portland’s Darlington Nagbe, who left the pitch on a wheelchair.

Safe to say the MLS Disciplinary Committee with have something to say about this one.

The incident sparked this heated exchange between the two clubs on Twitter:

BARNETTA SCORES 90TH MINUTE GOLAZO

On a lighter note, here’s the free kick that had everyone talking.

The goal itself was a thing of beauty. The fact that was a 90th-minute winner for Philadelphia Union in a 2-1 win over Orlando City SC made it even better.

Wait for the reverse angle. Look at the movement on that thing.

Turns out there was a little bit of a controversy on this one too, as pointed out by MLSSoccer.com’s Matthew Doyle. Four of Barnetta’s teammates stood behind the wall in an offside position and ran towards it as the free kick was taken. Did they intentionally try to block the sight of the goalkeeper? Does that make them offside?

It’s a moot point now, but interesting discussion nonetheless.

CREW REMAIN WINLESS

If someone were to have told you that the worst team in MLS after five matches would be MLS Cup finalist Columbus Crew, would you have believed them?

Not me.

Yet, there they are at the bottom of the MLS table with a 0W-3L-2D record. Their most recent result was a 2-0 loss to Montreal Impact, who are tied for the top spot in the Eastern Conference with Philadelphia.
