'The Bug' is back: Techera continues RSL dominance with 25-yard golazo

Cristian Techera celebration

There’s just something about Real Salt Lake that brings the best out of Cristian Techera.

The 5-foot-2 Uruguayan, who goes by “The Bug,” has now scored four of his nine career MLS goals against RSL – the most recent being a 25-yard blast in Wednesday’s 2-0 win at BC Place.

It was Techera’s second goal in as many games after opening his account with a goal from the penalty spot this past weekend. And it prompted this proclamation from Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson: “The bug that we saw last year is still here,” he told reporters.

After bagging seven goals and five assists in just 17 starts last year, it has taken the skillful winger a little while to get going in 2016. But Robinson revealed on Wednesday that Techera has been “carrying a little injury” over the last several weeks, which sheds a bit of light on his slow start.

“When you are carrying a little injury, you don’t play with as much confidence as you possibly can,” Robinson told reporters. “In the last two games, I think he has shown great character by scoring the penalty on the weekend and [on Wednesday] I thought he was excellent for the 60 minutes. So hopefully he’s getting back to where he was last year.”
