Whitecaps FC end lengthy road trip with 2-0 defeat in Colorado

COMMERCE CITY, CO
– Vancouver Whitecaps (8W-10L-6D) concluded a grueling three-match road trip with a 2-0 defeat against Colorado Rapids (11W-3L-8D) at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday.
Head coach Carl Robinson made three changes from last weekend’s match in Dallas. Canadian international David Edgar made his MLS debut, coming in at centre back and sliding Tim Parker over to right back in place of Cole Seiler. Newcomer Giles Barnes also made his ‘Caps debut, coming in for Masato Kudo at striker, while Cristian Techera returned to the starting lineup in place of Blas Pérez, moving Pedro Morales into the middle.
The first half had few clear opportunities for either side, but the best chance for the ‘Caps came in the 34th minute on a free kick just outside the box. After Morales earned it, the captain took it himself and dipped a shot over the crossbar as the score remained 0-0.
Just as it looked as if a quiet half would go into the break with no goals, the home team scored on 44 minutes. Left back Marc Burch skipped by a sliding Tim Parker then whipped in a low cross that was easily tapped in by Marlon Hairston for a 1-0 lead.
The match began to open up in the second half, with Morales having a great chance in the 52nd minute when a cross in from Andrew Jacobson landed at his feet, but his soft shot across goal was easily grabbed by Rapids goalkeeper Tim Howard.
Colorado then had a golden opportunity off a corner kick four minutes later with a free header on goal from Dillon Powers, but straight into the arms of David Ousted.
The ‘Caps tried to inject new life into the match on 60 minutes with both Nicolás Mezquida and Alphonso Davies subbing in, but they had only seconds on the field before the Rapids doubled their lead. Hairston was again involved, receiving a ball down the right wing before crossing in to Dominique Badji for a one-touch finish.
Neither side would find the net again as the match finished 2-0 in favour of Colorado.
Whitecaps FC now return to BC Place for their first ever Friday night home match on August 12. The ‘Caps take on San Jose Earthquakes in a massive Western Conference tilt. Tickets remain available at
