Table-watching: Cascadia Cup, playoff races heating up

The Cascadia Cup will be awarded on October 23 at BC Place.

After Portland’s 4-2 win over Seattle on Sunday night, we can now say for certain that no team can claim the Cascadia Cup until the final week of the regular season.

Here are the current standings with three games remaining:

<p align="center">0</p>
<p align="center">7</p>
<p align="center">10</p>
<p align="center">-3</p>

And here’s the remaining schedule:

  • September 17: Seattle Sounders FC vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC at CenturyLink Field
  • October 2: Vancouver Whitecaps FC vs. Seattle Sounders FC at BC Place
  • October 23: Vancouver Whitecaps FC vs. Portland Timbers at BC Place

So what does all this mean? Glad you asked.

For Vancouver to reclaim the Cascadia Cup, they need at least a point vs. Seattle in their next two matches and a win vs. Portland in the regular season finale.

That would put them atop the table with 10 points.

There’s also a scenario that could result in a three-way tie with nine points, if Seattle beats Vancouver twice and the ‘Caps beat Portland. In that case, the team with the best goal differential would take home the Cascadia Cup, awarded annually to the best team in the Pacific Northwest.

Either way, it’s coming down to October 23.

WESTERN CONFERENCE PLAYOFF RACE

The Cascadia foes are also fighting for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. As it stands, the Timbers are the only Cascadia side sitting above the red line, as you can see below.

Seattle has a game in hand, though, and the ‘Caps aren’t out of it either.

Especially if they play like they did on Saturday in LA.
