'Caps Correspondent: Cameron Chambers reports on the match vs. Colorado

Waston header vs. Colorado 2016 BC Place

As a 'Caps Club Member, Cameron Chambers used his 'Caps Points to have the unique chance to sit in the press box and report on 'Caps September 24 match against Colorado Rapids. Below, he shares his experience.

When I had first got the call saying that I had won the ‘Caps Correspondent competition which I had entered with my ‘Caps Points, I was thrilled to say the least. I have always enjoyed watching and cheering from the stands, but having an exclusive experience with the club such as this one was something that I would never have dreamed of when I first purchased my Season Tickets.

The match itself was very entertaining. It was the first ever MLS start for 15-year-old Alphonso Davies, the first ever player born in the 2000s to play in an MLS game. His potential definitely shined throughout the match, making many darting runs, and smart plays.

The ‘Caps went down early, when Colorado forward Dominique Badji scored in the eighth minute from the service of Marlon Hairston. It was a cagey first half with limited opportunities on either side.

The second half saw the ‘Caps tie the game up at one a piece, when Kendall Waston headed a corner kick from Christian Bolanos down into the far corner of the net. Shortly after that, however, Badji busted through the ‘Caps defensive line, and was bundled down by Waston in the penalty area, prompting a Colorado penalty kick, and Waston being sent off. Shkelzen Gashi comfortably converted the spot kick for the Rapids, making it 2-1 in favour of Colorado.

The ‘Caps appeared to be down and out at this stage, being down a goal with just 10 men. However, the ‘Caps kept on pressing for the equalizer, and it came in the 70th minute, when Pedro Morales calmly dispatched a cross from Giles Barnes into the net, tying up the game at two. These celebrations were short lived however, as just five minutes later, Gashi of the Colorado Rapids scored with a brilliant free kick, winning the MLS Goal of the Week award, and putting the Rapids up 3-2.

The ‘Caps continuously pressed for a late equalizer, and got just that in the 93rd minute, when Erik Hurtado’s header went bar down, then deflected off a Colorado Rapids defender and over the line, tying up the game for the Whitecaps, and earning a crucial point in the Western Conference playoff race.

As a supporter, I have always felt a certain connection with the club. However, getting the chance to see a brilliant, entertaining match from the press box was an incredible, unique experience that has only strengthened the passion that I feel for the club, and bring to every match.
