Alphonso Davies - closeup - portrait - black and white - smiling

In the second installment of Q&A, we sit down with 16-year-old Alphonso Davies ahead of his first full season in MLS. Catch Davies and the 'Caps in action on Thursday as Whitecaps FC host New York Red Bulls in their first home match of 2017 (7 p.m. PT - tickets still available).

What photo on your phone means the most to you and why?

Probably the first game of my career, my debut when Nicolas Mezquida came off and I went on. It was a great moment for me because it was my first game in MLS.

What’s your favourite non-soccer related thing to do in Vancouver?

Go to the mall.

Why?

I like the mall, just walking around. They have a Just Dance in the mall, so my friends and I play that a lot. It’s like Dance Dance Revolution.

Who’s your favourite soccer player?

It has to be Messi. I just like the way he plays. He’s a great inspiration to me.

What’s the last thing you read?

Wow. A book?

Anything. Could be something online…

I read this Twitter thing on Donald Trump.

What’s the best advice you were ever given?

Stay humble. A good friend, his name is Nick, always tells me to stay humble, keep your feet on the ground, don’t get too ahead of yourself. And I take that to heart.

How would other people describe you in one word?

Outgoing.

Why do you think that is?

I don’t know. I just like hanging out with people, making them laugh, and putting energy in the room.

What’s your favourite hobby?

Dancing is one for sure. Or playing FIFA.

What do you like about dancing?

Great way to keep in shape and it makes you feel good.

What’s the last thing you searched on Google?

My name. I was just trying to see what pictures were on there.

What’s your favourite sports team?

Probably the Golden State Warriors.

What’s the most embarrassing song on your playlist?

Barbie Girl. It has a catchy beat to it.

Do you dance to that one?

…sometimes.

Which of your teammates would you vote for President/Prime Minister?

I think it would be AJ. He’s a very smart guy.

Do you know why you were named Alphonso?

I think my grandpa’s name was Alphonso too, so it was passed on to me.

When is the last time you cried?

Wow. Probably a while ago. Maybe four years. We lost a very important game in my youth team and that was really emotional for me.

What’s one thing about yourself you’d like to improve – on or off the field?

My public speaking. Speaking to a big crowd, I get really nervous when it comes to that.
