Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency completed a fine weekend of USL Premier Development League results with a 4-1 win at Abbotsford Mariners on Sunday.

In what was the third PDL Western Conference Northwest Division meeting between the two Lower Mainland rivals, Thomas Niendorf's side built on Friday's home win over Ogden Outlaws with a fine weekend performance at Abbotsford's Bateman Park.

With the addition of first-team player Jeff Clarke adding a calming influence to the squad, it was Vancouver that took the lead as early as the 12th minute. Gagandeep Dosanjh's fine through ball found striker Randy Edwini-Bonsu in behind the Mariners back-line, with the Residency goalscorer slipping his finish past Abbotsford goalkeeper Tyler Baldock for 1-0.

The Whitecaps then doubled their advantage on 25 minutes with a similar play, as Dever Orgill slotted the ball past former Whitecaps keeper Baldock after Alex Semenets played the Jamaican youth international in behind the Mariners back four. The second goal brought a trademark somersault celebration from the Caribbean youngster.

Though two goals behind, the Mariners gave the home fans something to shout about on the half-hour mark, as an unmarked Justin Cordick struck Adam Lang's cross past Whitecaps goalkeeper Simon Thomas from the edge of the box for 2-1.

Despite the concession of a goal, the Whitecaps controlled the play throughout the opening 45 minutes, but to their credit, Abbotsford made a bright start to the beginning of the second half. Unfortunately for the Mariners, that good spell of play failed to translate into more goals.

On 67 minutes, the Residency ended any hopes of an Abbotsford comeback when Navid Mashinchi struck home on the rebound after seeing his initial penalty strike saved by Baldock.

Things took a turn for the worse for Abbotsford on 83 minutes, as Patrick Kelly was sent off for a second bookable offence following an altercation with Kyle Porter and Dosanjh.

Three minutes later, Porter completed a fine Whitecaps performance with the fourth goal, as he took substitute Marcus Johnstone's pass before making a fine run down the right flank. The striker cut inside and into the Abbotsford box before beating Baldock with an unstoppable finish to make it 4-1.

90 FULL MINUTES

Sunday's result takes Whitecaps Residency's record to 6-1-1, with Niendorf's side moving on to two important home encounters next weekend. On Saturday, Vancouver host division leaders Tacoma Tide at Simon Fraser University's Terry Fox Field on Saturday afternoon before hosting another Washington State club in Yakima Reds at SFU on Sunday. Abbotsford, meanwhile, host Yakima and Tacoma next weekend at Bateman Park.
