Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency earned their third-straight USL Premier Development League win after a 5-1 home drubbing of Tacoma Tide on Saturday afternoon.
A hat-trick from Randy Edwini-Bonsu was followed by two late strikes from substitute Marcus Johnstone, as the Edmonton, Alberta, pair capped what was a commanding performance from Thomas Niendorf's side at Simon Fraser University's Terry Fox Field.
The hot and sunny conditions seemed to effect Tacoma more than the hosts, and Edwini-Bonsu proved more than a handful for the Washington State club, as the striker forced Tacoma goalkeeper Jordan Jennings into a save after just six minutes.
The Tide number one was kept busy in the opening half, with captain Adam Straith and Ethan Gage bringing further stops from Jennings on nine minutes before striker Dever Orgill was denied the visiting shot-stopper four minutes later.
On 18 minutes, Gagandeep Dosanjh was unlucky not to open the scoring after seeing his long-range effort rattle off the Tacoma crossbar, but the Residency side would finally break the deadlock on 20 minutes. Edwini-Bonsu took a pass from Dosanjh before making an unstoppable run into the Tide box and finishing past Jennings to make it 1-0.
Two minutes later, the Whitecaps took command of the important PDL Western Conference Northwest Division match-up, as Dosanjh set up Edwini-Bonsu again to slip a fine finish past Jennings for 2-0.
It was proving to be a fine day for Edwini-Bonsu, with Jennings denying the striker a hat-trick with two good saves on both 27 and 32 minutes.
Unlike their previous meeting with Whitecaps Residency, where they defeated Vancouver 4-0 at home earlier this month, Tacoma offered little in terms of attacking endeavour before the break. A volleyed strike from Dennis Sanchez that sailed well wide of the target was the extent of the Tide's efforts before halftime.
The last chance of the half fell to Jamaican youngster Orgill, but his ambitious bicycle kick on 43 minutes went wide of Jennings' goal.
The start of the second half saw Philippe Davies replace Orgill and Greg Smith come in for Antionio Rago for Whitecaps Residency. Four minutes after the restart, Kyle Porter saw his chance saved by Jennings after Edwini-Bonsu played him in on goal.
Then Tacoma came close to scoring when Daniel Gray struck the post with a free kick on 52 minutes before the impressive Alex Semenets brought a good save from Jennings with a set-piece of his own two minutes later.
On 55 minutes, Edwini-Bonsu completed his hat-trick with another close-range finish after the forward took a forward ball from Residency goalkeeper Simon Thomas for 3-0.
The Whitecaps were cruising at this stage, but Tacoma would deny Thomas a clean sheet on 71 minutes, as Tide substitute Daniel Fadida converted Sanchez's free kick, which had been dubiously rewarded by referee Alain Ruch.
The Tacoma goal did not fade the home side, as substitute Johnstone got on the scoresheet on 76 minutes after knocking home Davies' cross from the right for 4-1. The forward then struck his second - and Whitecaps Residency's fifth – on 81 minutes when he connected with Porter's cross at the far post for 5-1.
Where the Whitecaps were converting their chances, Tacoma's miserable day was summed up in the dying stages, with Brett Hite squandering a free kick on 84 minutes before Steve Mohn inexplicably missed the target at close range on 89 minutes after Hite found him in front of goal.
Navid Mashinchi had the last opportunity of the game, but his curling free kick failed to bring a save out of Jennings. It did not matter in the end, as Whitecaps Residency cruised to a comfortable four-goal victory.
90 FULL MINUTES
Niendorf was delighted by his side's effort against the PDL Western Conference Northwest Division leaders. "I'm really pleased about the balance of the performance today, and especially with the connectivity from defense to the offence of our play," he told whitecapsfc.com after the game. "We capitalized on most of our chances and we had special efforts today, especially from Randy with his fine goals. We knew they would be vulnerable through the centre of their back-line, and the boys played with the instructions that we gave them, as well as with a bit of creativity mixed in. In the end, it was a good professional development performance."
Whitecaps Residency will have little time to think about Saturday's big win, as another Washington State club in Yakima Reds come to SFU for their next PDL encounter on Sunday afternoon. Tacoma, meanwhile, head to the Fraser Valley for a Sunday afternoon meeting with Abbotsford Mariners.
