Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency clinched a USL Premier Development League playoff spot with a solid 2-0 win over BYU Cougars in Provo, Utah, on Friday evening.
A win or a tie on Saturday against Ogden Outlaws will guarantee that Whitecaps Residency finish in first place in the PDL Western Conference Northwest Division after goals by Gagadeep Dosanjh and Drew Russell ensured Thomas Niendorf's side all three points at South Stadium on the campus of Brigham Young University.
Vancouver were without six players, with five off in Germany on a one-month trial with Energie Cottbus' U-19 Junior Bundesliga side, while forward Dever Orgill is still away with Jamaica's U-20 national side.
The Whitecaps were still able to field a strong and experienced side, however, with brothers Nick and Mason Webb included after the pair were re-assigned to the Residency squad from the men's first team.
The Whitecaps controlled play for most of the first half, using their speed and quick ball movement to get behind the Cougars defence time and again.
Alex Semenets hit the side-netting in the opening minutes from a good position. Then on 13 minutes, Randy Edwini-Bonsu broke in on goal, but fired just over the crossbar, as BYU keeper Bryan Black came rushing out to challenge him.
Two minutes later, the Whitecaps opened scoring, as Navid Mashinchi took a Semenets pass in the BYU box before sending a cross to an unmarked Dosanjh. The midfielder fired in his second goal of the season from close range.
The home side had their share of possession, but rarely got a good shot on goal. Britton Osborne had their first good chance midway through the half, but he was unable to beat Whitecaps goalkeeper Simon Thomas.
On minute 24, Nick Webb had a clear breakaway for the Whitecaps, but his shot deflected off Black and the base of the post before rolling out for a corner.
With five minutes remaining in the half, a give away gifted Edwini-Bonsu another look at goal, but Black made an superb save, as it remained 1-0 at the break.
The second half was less eventful, as Vancouver nursed their one-goal lead by doing a good job of containing BYU's attack, while hitting their hosts on the break.
Edwini-Bonsu continued to be dangerous, and just past the hour mark , the striker made a good run down the left before firing his shot at the onrushing Black, who cleared the striker's effort with his legs.
The home side had their best chance of the match on minute 85, as Michael Moreno volleyed over the Vancouver crossbar from a good position in front of goal.
The referee added quite a bit of injury time at the end of the match, and it was the Residency team that took advantage. Shortly after a Cougars defender cleared the ball off his own goal-line in a scramble, the young Whitecaps were awarded a free kick within shooting distance to the left of goal.
From the dead ball, Philippe Davies curled his set-piece that Black initially stopped, but substitute Russell was on hand to put away the rebound to make it a 2-0 final.
90 FULL MINUTES
The Whitecaps improve to 11-3-1, and move into top spot in the Northwest Division with 34 points. They are three points up on Tacoma Tide, with both teams having a game remaining in their regular season campaign. The Whitecaps now travel to Ogden, Utah, to face the 4-8-2 Outlaws on Saturday evening. The Cougars, meanwhile, drop to 7-6-2 and complete their season at home to another British Columbia club in Abbotsford Mariners on Saturday.
