BIOGRAPHYPROFILEAn established Canadian international and USL W-League player, Sophie Schmidt will be an integral part of the Whitecaps squad this season after being part of Canada’s Residency Program in 2008. An attack-minded midfielder, Schmidt sits 19th amongst Whitecaps career leaders with 14 points in 34 total appearances. VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC Schmidt returns for her fifth year with the Whitecaps after beginning her W-League career with the club as a 16-year-old back in 2005. In 2006, she played in nine matches and earned three assists, as the Whitecaps captured the W-League championship title. In 2007, the midfielder played in all twelve matches, scoring three goals, before appearing in four matches for Vncouver in 2008, notching two assists. In her four years with the club, Schmidt has amassed 2,807 minutes of action in 34 total appearances, scoring four goals and adding six assists. INTERNATIONAL U-20: Schmidt has been a regular selection in Canada’s national team program since making her international debut with the U-20 squad on November 11, 2004. The established midfielder earned 29 U-20 caps, having represented Canada at the 2004 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Thailand, the 2006 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Russia, and the 2008 CONCACAF U-20 Women’s Championship in Puebla, Mexico. Senior: Schmidt made her debut in 2005 during a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands before scoring her first goal three matches later in a 2-0 win over France. As a member of Canada’s senior national team, Schmidt appeared at both the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup in China and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In total, she has earned 43 senior caps for her country, scoring three goals in the process. COLLEGE Schmidt had an excellent freshman year with the University of Portland in 2007. She was named to the Soccer America Freshman All-America First Team, as well as the All-West Coast Conference (WCC) First Team and All-WCC Freshman Team as a member of the Pilots. This despite missing the first eight games of the season due to FIFA Women’s World Cup commitments with Canada. |
