PROFILE
A promising right fullback with plenty of club and provincial team experience, Matthew van der Eyden joined Whitecaps FC Residency in Sept. 2011 after last playing for Coquitlam Metro-Ford Sparta U-16 'A' Select.  

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC PROSPECTS
From 2006 to 2009, van der Eyden was a member of Whitecaps FC Prospects, where he trained under Residency staff coach Bart Choufour. As a member of the club's U-13 Prospects side, van der Eyden helped the Blue and White win two youth tournaments in the Netherlands in the summer of 2007. Choufour's side won the Hollandia D-Pupillen Tournament and the Yerseke Mossel Tournament.

YOUTH/AMATEUR
The defender started his soccer career in his hometown of New Westminster, BC, with Royal City Youth Soccer Club (2000 to 2005) before moving to Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club (2005 to 2011). He served as captain of Coquitlam Metro-Ford Sparta, and claimed two British Columbia Coastal Cup and two BC Provincial Cup titles in the 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons with the club. He also claimed a bronze medal at the 2009 Canadian Club Championship. As a member of BC provincial team, van der Eyden represented his home province from U-13 to U-16 levels (2008 to 2011). This included a bronze medal for BC at the 2011 Canadian U-16 All-Star Championship in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland.

PERSONAL
A native of New Westminster, BC, van der Eyden attended Our Lady of Mercy School in nearby Burnaby, BC, before moving to New Westminster Secondary School.  

INTERESTING FACTS
In van der Eyden's free time, the defender enjoys longboarding and skateboarding. He is a fan of English Premier League giants Manchester United FC, while his favourite player is Manchester United's Serbian centre back Nemanja Vidic. One day, van der Eyden would like to play at Real Madrid's famous Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. His favourite food is corned beef and roti.
