Prospects finish strong at Odyssey Cup

January 6, 2008

Vancouver Whitecaps FC Prospect teams had a strong finish to their Odyssey Cup tournament campaign in Los Angeles, California on Sunday.

The U-12 Girls won their tournament with two one-goal victories, while the U-13 and U-14 Girls came up short in their respective tournament finals.

The U-13 and U-14 Boys, meanwhile, completed their campaigns with three wins and a defeat. The U-13 Boys had a victory and a loss, while the U-14 Boys claimed two victories to cap their trip to southern California.

The Whitecaps took five Prospect teams - the U-12, U-13 and U-14 Girls and the U-13 and U-14 Boys – to southern California to participate in the Odyssey Cup tournament on Saturday and Sunday.  As part of the weekend trip, the Whitecaps also arranged an exhibition series against top-ranked US youth club Arsenal SC on Friday.

U-12 GIRLS

Game One: 1-0 win vs West LA

Due to injuries and other circumstances, West LA had to forfeit a 1-0 defeat to the Whitecaps after failing to have enough players to field a team on Sunday morning.

Game Two: 1-0 win vs Cerritos Regional Infinity

The Whitecaps won the U-12 Girls title, as Mikaela Kautzky’s first-half header from a cross gave Vancouver a 1-0 final win over California’s Cerritos Regional Infinity. The Caps came out excited and confident of beating a very athletic and well-organized Infinity team. Nicole Turney and Aman Shergill caused lots of stress to the Infinity backline with great penetrating movements and dribbling. “The U-12 Girls kept getting better as the tournament went on,” Girls Prospects head coach Jesse Symons told whitecapsfc.com. “They had great team chemistry and represented the Whitecaps on and off the field very well.”

U-13 GIRLS

Game One: 1-0 win vs Force SC

Sam McKluskie scored the Whitecaps winner in the first half, as the U-13 Girls made the tournament final with a 1-0 victory over host side Force SC. The game encountered in some bad weather, as the teams played in a heavy downpour.

Game Two: 1-0 loss vs Cerritos Regional Infinity

After a great performance in the morning game to get to the final, the U-13 Girls could not find their legs against a physically strong Cerritos Regional Infinity team and lost 1-0. A strong performance was put in by Carley Radomski at centre back, as she stopped many Infinity attacks and distributed the ball very well.

U-14 GIRLS

Game One: 8-0 win vs West Rhodes

The U-14 Girls matched Saturday’s eight-goal win over West LA with an 8-0 victory over West Rhodes to start their day.

Game Two: 3-2 loss (PK) vs Arsenal SC

After winning their friendly encounter 3-2 on Friday and beating the same side 2-0 on Saturday, the U-14 Girls lost 3-2 on penalty kicks to Arsenal SC in the tournament final on Sunday.

U-13 BOYS

Game One: 3-0 win vs Los Alamitos Vikings SE

The U-13 Boys got goals from Harry Caya, Michael North, and Bryan Taylor, as they defeated Los Alamitos Vikings SE 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Game Two: 1-0 loss vs Palos Verdes Green Vipers

The U-13 Boys lost an outstanding final game against one of southern California’s best teams in the Palos Verdes Green Vipers. The game was decided on a dubious penalty decision. The Whitecaps came very close to scoring on many occasions, as they completely controlled what was a very high-paced contest.

U-14 BOYS

Game One: 1-0 win vs Palos Verdes Raiders

The U-14 Boys opened Sunday’s action with a 1-0 victory over Los Angeles-based Palos Verdes Raiders. The Whitecaps were in control of the whole game against a very defensive Raiders side. Vancouver squandered many chances throughout the game, but Yassin Essa finished superbly in the last minute after a nice through ball and individual action.

Game Two: 3-2 win vs Los Alamitos Vikings Barcelona

The U-14 Boys completed their Odyssey Cup campaign with a 3-2 win over Los Alamitos Vikings Barcelona. The Whitecaps came back from 2-1 down to win their final game of the tournament. Vancouver’s goals came from Daniel Stanese, Yassin Essa, and Carlos Marquez.
