Residency cap German tour with win

October 31, 2007

Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency completed their German tour schedule with a convincing 4-0 victory over amateur club SC Zwiesel on Wednesday.

Having been based in Zwiesel over the past two weeks, Thomas Niendorf’s squad played the Lower Bavaria Bezirksoberliga club in front of a small crowd at Zwiesel’s home stadium as a gesture of gratitude to the German town that has hosted his group during their short stay.

After playing some quality youth teams from Bundesliga clubs in their previous five encounters, Whitecaps Residency went on to dominate Wednesday’s game against their Bavarian hosts, though they had to wait until the second half to find the scoresheet.

Niendorf made six changes following the halftime break, with substitute striker Dever Orgill (pictured) scoring the residency team’s winner on 58 minutes. The Jamaican youth international converted on the rebound after the Zwiesel goalkeeper had stopped fellow substitute Philippe Davies’ initial shot.

Whitecaps then doubled their advantage two minutes later when Kyle Porter neatly finished into the far corner of the goal after making his way with possession into the Zwiesel penalty box.

Having partnered Randy Edwini-Bonsu in attack in the first half, Navid Mashinchi came on as a substitute for William Hyde in the second half and promptly sealed the win with two late goals.

The Coquitlam, BC, native made it 3-0 on 73 minutes with a low right-foot strike into the right-hand corner of the goal before claiming his second goal of the contest five minutes later, as he curled a fine left-foot shot into the far corner of the net from the edge of Zwiesel’s box.

Niendorf was delighted with his team’s focus and performance during Wednesday’s win over Zwiesel, and the result caps a successful European trip for the talented young squad.

Whitecaps Residency will have two more training sessions and take in some sightseeing on Thursday and Friday before returning home to Vancouver on Saturday evening.
