Caps Residency end year with a win

Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency capped their 2007 schedule with a 4-2 victory over Victoria Selects on Tuesday afternoon.

It was the group’s fifth straight friendly win, with the streak having started in the final game of their German tour - a 4-0 victory over SC Zwiesel on October 31. Subsequent results against Surrey United (November 13), Trinity Western University Spartans (November 27), and Poco City (December 12) followed before Thomas Niendorf’s squad headed to Vancouver Island for their final game of the year.

The turf pitch at Esquimalt’s Hampton Park was the venue for Tuesday’s friendly contest, with Whitecaps Residency making a bright start to the game, but falling behind to their hosts on the half-hour mark. Two minutes before the break, residency striker Dever Orgill equalized with a header that took both sides into halftime at 1-1.

Victoria proved to be worthy opponents for the residency group and they regained the lead on 59 minutes before Jamaican youth international Orgill made it 2-2 with a fine finish from a tight angle five minutes later.

On 70 minutes, Whitecaps Residency took the lead for the first time in the game through a superb strike from substitute Philippe Davies. The Longueuil, Quebec native fired home from 30 yards out after Alex Semenets had played a free kick into the midfielder’s path.

With 10 minutes remaining, Niendorf’s squad sealed victory in the British Columbia provincial capital, as Orgill completed his hat-trick by finishing off some fine attacking build-up play.

There was an interested spectator at Tuesday game, as new Whitecaps men’s team head coach Teitur Thordarson took in proceedings at Hampton Park. The Icelandic tactician was impressed by the youngsters’ performances. “They started very well in the first 20 minutes and dominated the game, but then gave it away a little bit,” the former Estonia manager told whitecapsfc.com. “They came back strongly in the second half and towards the end, I thought they were the best team on the field. There is a lot of very good talent here and many of them are certainly capable of playing professionally, so I was very satisfied with that.”

After a busy few months of training and playing games, the Residency team will return home for a deserved holiday season break before assembling again for more training early in the New Year.
