WFC Super Y Affiliates
The Vancouver Whitecaps FC (WFC) operate in the United Soccer Leagues (USL), which includes a Men’s franchise in the USL First Division, a Women’s franchise in the USL W-League, and a Youth franchise in the USL Super Y League. Through the partnership and governance of the British Columbia Soccer Association (BCSA), the Vancouver Whitecaps operate in the Super Y League in BC.
The Super Y League is a series of regional divisions within a North American league containing the premier clubs and players from the U.S. and Canada. Division winners across North America compete for Super Y Championships in Florida scheduled in November.
Within the BC Soccer Player Development Model and under the Whitecaps FC umbrella, the Whitecaps have used their Super Y League status to create “WFC Affiliates” to operate Super Y League teams. These new Whitecaps “WFC Affiliates” are made up of districts, clubs, partners, and professional coaches with a goal of providing additional and regional competitive opportunities for both players and coaches.
Coastal WFC and Mountain WFC operate as Whitecaps “WFC Affiliate” teams in ages from U13 to U16 for boys and girls. Surrey WFC has been added as a third “WFC Affiliate” in 2008, which will operate teams in ages U13 to U14 for boys and girls.
Coastal WFC is a regional affiliate spanning several districts and clubs including Delta, Surrey, Richmond and Vancouver. Mountain WFC covers districts and clubs in Burnaby, Coquitlam, Vancouver, North Vancouver and West Vancouver. Surrey WFC primarily spans five member clubs including Guildford Athletic Club (GAC), Surrey United Soccer Club (SUSC), Surrey Breakers Athletic Association (SBAA), Surrey Youth Soccer Association (SYSA), and Whalley Soccer Club (WSC).
A goal of the WFC Affiliates is to foster collaboration between partner clubs within their affiliate to provide development opportunities for players and coaches. Players and coaches are encouraged to participate within their official affiliate areas. However, in the spirit of player development and more enhanced development opportunities for players across the Lower Mainland, there are no geographic boundaries or player movement restrictions between affiliates.
Whitecaps staff are closely associated with these new Whitecaps “WFC Affiliates”, and along with BCSA staff, evaluate players from these regional “WFC Affiliate” teams during the spring and summer Super Y League season for future opportunities.
WFC Affiliates are managed by Whitecaps FC and governed by the BCSA. Whitecaps FC development Manager Matt Holbrook manages the overall program, and works closely with the WFC Affiliates. All WFC Affiliates manage their operations following the 2008 “WFC Affiliate Operations Manual” for the season. Each Affiliate includes an Operation Committee composed of members from participating clubs, a General Manager which is the main contact, and a Technical Director who oversees the coaching staff.
Joining Coastal, Mountain and Surrey in Super Y-League Northwest Division play this summer will be Abbotsford, Okanagan, and Victoria, along with American opposition from Seattle, Spokane, Yakima and Evergreen. All teams will compete for the opportunity to represent the Northwest Division at the Super Y-League North American Finals in Florida.
