VANCOUVER, BC – “Win, win, and win.”
That’s how Vancouver Whitecaps FC co-owner Jeff Mallett answered a question earlier this month about juggling three different competitions during what is set to be a busy month of August.
“It’s going to test our depth,” Mallett added.
He’s not kidding.
The ‘Caps will play a total of eight matches in August between regular season play, the Amway Canadian Championship, and the CONCACAF Champions League, matching their busiest month since joining MLS in 2011.
“This is what happens when you make Champions League football,” Mallett told reporters. “It’s all exciting until all of a sudden you’re flying around and you have to figure it out, and by the way you have multiple fixtures coming up and you have a home and away with Montreal.”
Before that home and away with Montreal Impact in the Amway Canadian Championship final, however, the ‘Caps will play a home and away with longtime rival Seattle Sounders FC – starting this Saturday in an MLS regular season fixture at CenturyLink Field (7 p.m. PT kickoff on TSN1).

Then, the two teams will make the short trip up to Vancouver and do battle again four days later in Vancouver’s first-ever CONCACAF Champions League match on August 5 at BC Place.
At the start of the year, many pundits pointed to June as a month that may define Vancouver's season. The 'Caps passed that test with flying colours, winning three of five straight matches on the road.
The coming month will be the next big test for the Blue and White.
In fact, you could make a case that this is the biggest month in the club's MLS history.
Not only are Whitecaps FC set to play their first-ever CONCACAF Champions League match next week, they're also hoping to win the club's first-ever Voyageurs Cup on August 26 at BC Place.
Then, of course, there's the fact that they're very much in the mix for the top spot in the MLS Western Conference and potentially a home playoff date.
And with league games coming up against Seattle, Sporting Kansas City, and Western Conference leaders FC Dallas, a strong showing this month could put them in pole position heading into the stretch.
Buckle up: it's going to be one heck of a ride.
