MLS Academy Equipment Assistant

Specific Responsibilities

The duties of this position will consist of the following:

1. General Duties

  • Perform all job-related administrative tasks as assigned by the MLS Academy Equipment Manager
  • Ensure that the standards of organization and cleanliness are upheld in all equipment and kit storage areas, as well as the team locker rooms
  • Assist the equipment manager to ensure that all locker rooms are set up for training and presented to the club standard
  • Assist the equipment manager to ensure that all required training equipment is taken out to the field ahead of training sessions
  • Provide on-field support for the coaches during training sessions
  • Do a quick sweep of all fields at the end of training sessions to ensure that all equipment and apparel is picked up, field and surrounding area is clean, and all goals are put back into the proper positions
  • Assist with the washing, drying and hanging of training kit and towels following training days
  • Assist with the washing, drying and hanging of match kit and towels following match days
  • Assist the equipment manager to ensure that all locker rooms are clean at the end of each training/match day
  • Assist the equipment manager to conduct a final sweep at the end of each training/match day to ensure that all equipment storage areas are organized, and all gates/doors are locked
  • Help to ensure that the equipment/laundry room is always kept in a very clean and orderly manner; equipment bins (and surrounding area) are always clean, garbage cans/recycling are emptied on a frequent basis
  • Enforce training facility rules, policies and procedures for players and staff
  • Ensure that all equipment is inspected daily
  • Help monitor players with their daily jobs
  • Run MLS Academy or U23 training days/match days when the MLS Academy Equipment Manager/U23 Equipment Manger are traveling with a team

2. Apparel and Equipment Management

  • Assist with the distribution and inventory control of all equipment and apparel for the MLS Academy players and staff
  • Ensure that all uniforms and related apparel/equipment are maintained in a clean and serviceable condition
  • Assist with uniform and equipment distribution and retrieval at training and on game day

3. Team Travel

  • Assist with packing and preparation for each team trip
  • Travel, as required, for away matches (local league play, tournaments, MLS NEXT regular season and Playoffs/Showcases)
  • Assist with equipment transport to and from the airport before/after team travel dates

4. Game Day Responsibilities

  • Assist with all U23 and MLS Academy home game days
  • Be familiar with all league match day requirements and ensure that all league rules, policies and standards are strictly adhered to
  • Work with the MLS Academy Equipment Manager and U23 Equipment Manager to ensure that the team locker room set up is complete a minimum of 60 minutes prior to the scheduled player arrival time in the following manner:
  • Table with recovery food, notices, any other pertinent information
  • Each player has all match kit and a towel placed in their designated locker stall
  • Set up garbage bins and laundry bins for post-game
  • Work with the MLS Academy Equipment Manager/U23 Equipment Manager to execute the game day set up for all home games;
  • Visitor/official locker room set up and clean up, as required
  • Field set up and clean up
  • Serve as the on-site liaison for visiting teams and officials
  • Ensure that the team benches and fourth officials area are set up
  • Work with the sport science team ensure that ample supplies of water, isotonic beverage and ice are delivered to the field approximately 30 minutes prior to the start of each match
  • Transport all team warm up equipment to the field (balls, cones, pinnies, etc.)
  • Inflate and transport match balls as per specific league requirements

5. Additional Club and Meeting Commitments

  • Attend weekly staff meetings as scheduled by members of the Whitecaps FC management team.
  • Attend special meetings for program related issues as required and scheduled
  • Attend the annual club All-Staff Meeting



  • High school graduation with preference given to candidates with post-secondary education

Work Experience:

  • Paid/volunteer experience with operations and logistics experience of a sport organization
  • Work experience requiring physical and hands on duties


  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Voluntary submission of a driving abstract
  • Voluntary completion of a Background Check (Vulnerable Sector)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Highly organized with excellent time management and ability to prioritize
  • Strong work ethic
  • Proficient with all Microsoft Office applications and web-based inventory systems
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment both independently and within a team
