Whitecaps Release Six Players

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today they will not exercise the contract options on Sola Abolaji, Richard Goddard, Marty Johnston, Nigel Marples, Jason McLaughlin, and Narcisse Tchoumi.

Abolaji, a 22-year-old from Denver, Colorado, was acquired last July in a trade for forward Joel Bailey. The rookie defender played in one game for 29 minutes.

Goddard, 29, joined the Whitecaps at the start of the 2007 campaign. The veteran goalkeeper hails from Scarborough, Trinidad and Tobago, and recorded two wins, four losses and five ties for a goals-against-average of 0.93.

Rookie forward Johnston, 22, from Leawood, Kansas, played in two games for 13 minutes.

Marples, a first-year defender, recorded 74 minutes in two games. Marples, 21, hails from North Delta, BC.

McLaughlin, a 25-year-old native of Wetumpka, Alabama, played in 19 regular-season games for 550 minutes in his first season with the Caps. The striker recorded one assist.

Tchoumi, 24, played in nine matches for 470 minutes during his first year in Vancouver. The defender is a native of Yaoundé, Cameroon.
