Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency suffered a 3-1 defeat to a combined U-19/U-23 side from 1860 Munich on Tuesday.In what proved to be an intense and physical contest at 1860 Munich’s training ground, it was the home side that took the lead on 22 minutes from a header off a corner, as the Whitecaps defence were beaten at the near post.The lead lasted only a minute, however, as Randy Edwini-Bonsu equalized for Thomas Niendorf’s side. The Edmonton, Alberta, native (pictured) took a pass from Marcus Johnstone in the 1860 penalty box before placing an unstoppable shot into the far corner of the net. Despite playing a side that was considerably older, Whitecaps Residency did well to get to halftime level at 1-1.The German side, however, restored their advantage five minutes after the break, with a fine strike from outside of Vancouver’s penalty box that flew past Whitecaps goalkeeper Karm Shergill and into the top corner of the goal.1860 then sealed victory with a third goal on the hour mark from another header off a free kick, as the Canadian visitors were beaten in the air for a second time. Both teams made several changes during Tuesday’s contest, with Niendorf making five second-half substitutions. The attacking endeavour that seen in the opening 60 minutes of the game faded in the final half-hour, as neither side were able to make the most of their ball possession before the final whistle.Though it was the heaviest defeat of their German tour so far, Niendorf was pleased his young squad continued to battle against a more experienced side from 1860.Whitecaps Residency will complete their six-game schedule with a friendly against amateur club SC Zwiesel of the Lower Bavaria Bezirksoberliga on Wednesday before flying back to Vancouver on Saturday evening.
