Residency defeat Surrey United 5-0

Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency made a triumphant return to action on Canadian soil with a 5-0 victory over Surrey United men’s side on Tuesday night. In the first game since the group’s successful trip to Germany late last month, Thomas Niendorf’s side made the most of their goalscoring opportunities to see off their Vancouver Metro Soccer League Premier Division hosts. In fact, the scoreline may have been a bit a flattering for Whitecaps Residency, as the talented young group found Surrey United’s senior men a challenge in the early stages of the opening half at Cloverdale Athletic Park. The turning point came on 27 minutes, as the Whitecaps scored the first of four first-half goals. Striker Randy Edwini-Bonsu latched on to a through ball before finishing the chance for 1-0. It was the first of three goals in nine minutes for Niendorf’s squad. The second goal came two minutes later when Mississauga, Ontario native Kyle Porter struck home a fine left-foot shot from the edge of Surrey United’s penalty box. The residency group then made it 3-0 on 36 minutes, as Abbotsford midfielder Gagandeep Dosanjh converted Antonio Rago’s missed penalty on the rebound. It became 4-0 on 43 minutes, as Edwini-Bonsu finished off a sublime attacking move that was orchestrated through fine work by Dosanjh. After winning in the league on Saturday, Surrey United must have felt shell-shocked to be four goals behind at halftime, but to their credit, they put in a strong second-half performance against their younger opponents.Despite their efforts, it was the Whitecaps that ended the scoring, and in some style through striker Dever Orgill. The Jamaican youth international controlled a ball with his chest before striking home a volleyed finish for his side’s fifth and final goal of the evening.Whitecaps FC Residency – line-up v Surrey UnitedSimon Thomas; Antonio Rago, Adam Straith, Anthony DiNicolo, William Hyde; Kyle Porter, Ethan Gage, Devin Gunenc (Alex Semenets 60’), Gagandeep Dosanjh; Randy Edwini-Bonsu, Marcus Johnstone (Dever Orgill 50’)
