Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency continued their winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Trinity Western University Spartans in Langley.Two weeks on from their convincing 5-0 win over Surrey United men’s side, Thomas Niendorf’s young squad were locked in an entertaining battle with the Canada West men’s soccer champions at the Spartan Field Complex on Tuesday evening.The Residency team’s winner came in the 19th minute when William Hyde’s forward ball was flicked on by Marcus Johnstone to strike partner Dever Orgill. The Jamaican youth international broke past the Trinity Western backline before slipping the ball past onrushing Spartans goalkeeper Andrew Fink. Fink was kept busy during Tuesday’s game, as he needed to make two point-blank saves from Whitecaps Residency opportunities. Even the woodwork came to rescue of the home side, as midfielder Alex Semenets struck a shot off the post from just inside Trinity Western’s penalty box. To their credit, the Spartans kept battling and nearly gave the sizable crowd in attendance something to cheer about with 17 minutes remaining. Defender Jake Jorgenson’s free kick into the Whitecaps penalty box found Canada West’s top goalscorer Nathan Pogue, but the Seaside, Oregon native was unable to direct his header on target, as the ball flew just past keeper Simon Thomas’ goal. In the end, it was the young visitors that claimed the plaudits from a spirited friendly contest, as Trinity Western ended their 2007 schedule with defeat on Tuesday. The Spartans will resume play in the New Year, with a friendly match against the Whitecaps men’s side slated for the end of March.Whitecaps Residency, meanwhile, plan to play a couple more friendly games before taking a break for the holiday period at the end of December.
