VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Whitecaps named Teitur Thordarson as the new head coach of the United Soccer League team Tuesday.

Thordarson, 55, a native of Iceland, spent three years as head coach of Estonia's national team.

He replaces Bob Lilley who was fired Sept. 18 when the Whitecaps were eliminated from the first-round of the playoffs after struggling to a 9-7-12 record.

Lilley had led the Whitecaps to the USL First Division championship in 2006.
