Caps add Pair from D.C. United

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today the signing of goalkeeper Jay Nolly and striker Nicholas Addlery, pending international clearance. Nolly and Addlery, who were both members of Major League Soccer (MLS) side D.C. United in 2007, have agreed to a one-year contract, plus an option.

Nolly, 26, joins the Whitecaps after playing the last three seasons in MLS. In 2007, the six-foot-three, 208-pound goalkeeper, made one appearance as a starter with D.C. United, a 2-1 loss to Real Salt Lake on June 23. As a member of the reserve squad, Nolly made 11 starts and recorded a 0.99 goals-against-average. This included two shutouts for a 2-3-4 record.

Nolly played his first two years in MLS with Real Salt Lake after being selected by the Utah-based club in the second round (22nd overall) of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft. In his first start, Nolly recorded nine saves to earn a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy. During his two seasons in Salt Lake, Nolly played in seven games, six of those as a starter, and posted a 1-4-1 record.

At the college level, Nolly was a standout at Indiana University from 2001 to 2004. He helped the Hoosiers to three NCAA Division I College Cup appearances, four Big Ten regular season titles, two Big Ten Tournament titles and back-to-back National Championships where he was named College Cup Defensive MVP in 2003 and 2004. Nolly was a three-time first team All-Big Ten goalkeeper and was an All-American in 2004. He finished his college career with a record of 51-11-8, and registered a 0.66 goals-against-average and 30 shutouts. While at Indiana, Nolly majored in Education.

Nolly, who was born in Orlando, Florida, but raised in Littleton, Colorado, started playing soccer when he was four years old, but did not play in goal until he was 13. A natural athlete who also grew up playing basketball and football, he quickly adapted to the new position and earned a spot on the Colorado Regional Team, which in turn led to a spot on the US youth national team in 1996, at age 16. Outside of soccer, Nolly enjoys the outdoors and in particular hiking, camping and fly-fishing.
