Cameroon and Egypt meet in final

The 26th African Cup of Nations final will see two of the tournament’s most successful nations meet on Sunday, as current holders Egypt take on Cameroon. This will be the second match between the two sides at Ghana 2008, with The Pharaohs having defeated The Indomitable Lions 4-2 in their earlier contest in Group C. The Egyptians stunned many by disposing of tournament favourites Ivory Coast in the semifinals on Thursday. Goals from Ahmed Fathi, Amr Zaki (2) and Mohamed Aboutriaka gave the North Africans a 4-1 win over The Elephants in Kumasi. Cameroon, meanwhile, ended the dreams of host nation Ghana with a 1-0 semifinal victory in Accra. It was Cameroon's first win over The Black Stars for 41 years. A win for Egypt on Sunday will see them create history as the first six-time winner of the competition, while Cameroon are aiming to join The Pharaohs as five-time African Cup of Nations champions. Accra’s Ohene Djan Stadium will be the venue for Sunday’s showdown, with kickoff slated for 9am Pacific Standard Time. Saturday’s third-place game between Ghana and Ivory Coast is a contest that many might have expected to see in the final. Before Thursday’s semifinal defeats, both nations had been in excellent form since the start of the tournament on January 20. With the main prize beyond both country’s reach at this stage, it will interesting to see how the Ghanaians and Ivorians approach a game that neither side wanted to be in. Saturday’s game kicks off at 9am PST in Kumasi. For more information on where to follow the third-place match and final of the 26th African Cup of Nations, please click here to our Ghana 2008 page.
