Cann selected to national team

Vancouver Whitecaps, in conjunction with the Canadian Soccer Association, have announced that defender Adrian Cann has been selected to the Canadian men’s national team final training camp before beginning Stage II of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. The camp opens Sunday, May 25, and features two international friendly matches against Brazil on May 31 and Panama on June 4.

This is Cann’s second career call up to Canada’s men’s national side. Cann made his senior international debut in a 1-0 friendly win over Martinique on January 30, 2008. Cann also played in a 2-0 friendly win over the Danish club, Vejle Boldklub, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida four days later.

The six-foot-three, 187-pound defender has been a mainstay in the heart of the Whitecaps back-line since his introduction to the club in March of 2006. In 2007, Cann lead the Whitecaps in minutes played and started all but one of the 28 regular season games. For his efforts, he was named the team’s Defender of the Year. Prior to the start of this season, the centre-back was named team captain and has helped Vancouver to a league best defence with a 3-1-1 record.

The training camp will open on Sunday, May 25 in Seattle, Washington. Canada will then play an international friendly against Brazil at Qwest Field on May 31, before heading to Fort Lauderdale to play Panama on June 4. Canada’s campaign to qualify for World Cup 2010 begins on June 15, with a home and away series against St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Brazil is currently ranked 2nd in the world, Panama is 67th, while Canada sits at the 62nd spot.

The Whitecaps first doubleheader of the season is this Friday, May 23, as the women take on the Los Angeles Legends at 5:00 p.m. and the men face the Seattle Sounders at 8:00 p.m. Friday is also a Wendy's Family Night - four tickets and two Wendy's Kids' Meals for only $48.
