CHARLESTON, S.C. — Jason Jordan and Nicholas Addlery scored as the Vancouver Whitecaps ended the Charleston Battery's five-game win streak with a 2-0 victory in United Soccer Leagues First Division action Wednesday.
Charleston (5-2-2) remained in first place in the USL First Division, while Vancouver (5-2-1) moved into second.
Charleston created the first chance of the game in the eighth minute after striker Randi Patterson was fouled at the edge of the box. Midfielder Osvaldo Alonso took the ensuing free-kick but his effort sailed high.
One minute later Vancouver went ahead after some good work down the right flank by the right-back, Lyle Martin. Martin evaded Mike Richardson's challenge and slipped a ball into the near post to Jordan, who finished with a goal.
The Battery fought back and Patterson put winger Chris Williams in behind the Vancouver defence in the 14th minute with a good diagonal ball. Williams took a touch then hit a hard right-footed shot that was turned over the bar by goalkeeper Jay Nolly.
In the 70th minute the Battery almost tied the game after Williams attempted to cross from the right side. The ball came off his boot awkwardly and angled towards goal but Nolly backpedaled and just managed to tip the ball over the top.
Vancouver put the game beyond doubt in the 75th minute when Addlery carried the ball into the box, evaded Battery goalkeeper Keith Wiggans and finished neatly with a right-footed strike.
