Gbeke in USL-1 Team of the Week

Vancouver Whitecaps forward Charles Gbeke has been named in the latest USL First Division Team of the Week.

The former Montreal Impact striker, who returned for his fourth spell with the club after being recently traded for midfielder Tony Donatelli, made the Week 15 squad after playing an influential part in Vancouver's last two games at Swangard.

The Ivory Coast-born player scored the Whitecaps crucial equalizer in last Wednesday's 1-1 draw with USL-1 leaders Charleston Battery. He then collected an assist on Eduardo Sebrango's winning goal on Saturday, as the Whitecaps defeated Carolina RailHawks for the first time in club history with a 1-0 victory.

Gbeke was one of three forwards to be chosen, with Seattle Sounders striker Sebastien Le Toux and Miami FC Blues goalscorer Alex Afonso joining him in the attack. The Minnesota Thunder pair of Stephen deRoux and Ricardo Sanchez were selected in midfield. They were joined by Luke Kreamalmeyer from Rochester Rhinos and Edwin Miranda from Puerto Rico Islanders.

The Week 15 Player of the Week was Irish youngster Danny Earls, with the Rochester player one of three defenders chosen by the league after his performances in the Rhinos' home-and-home weekend series with Montreal. Carolina's Frankie Sanfilippo and Portland's Cameron Knowles also made the weekly all-star XI in the backline. Portland's on-loan goalkeeper Brad Knighton was also selected after making five saves in their 0-0 draw with Carolina.
