Vancouver Whitecaps FC are encouraging all Whitecaps fans to help families in need in British Columbia on August 27.
The Whitecaps, along with well-known soccer name brand Umbro, have partnered with The Salvation Army to present the 'Umbro One World Night of Giving'. The goal is to help provide soccer equipment to children from low-income families throughout the province.
Fans are asked to bring their gently-worn boots and soccer equipment as donations before the Whitecaps USL First Division match versus Atlanta Silverbacks at Swangard Stadium on Wednesday, August 27. When you donate your gently-worn soccer equipment, you will receive a special 25 per cent discount coupon for your next Umbro boot or equipment purchase.
The Salvation Army will have donation bins present at Swangard Stadium to collect the equipment, as well as a large information booth where supporters can make a charitable donation as well. All proceeds will directly support families in need in BC. The Salvation Army will also have donation bins for soccer equipment at a number of Salvation Army thrift stores in the Lower Mainland region for those that are unable to attend next Wednesday's game.
The match versus Atlanta will also offer Whitecaps fans the chance to help The Salvation Army by purchasing a specially made soccer stress ball. 1,000 stress balls are being manufactured for next Wednesday's match, with both the Whitecaps and Salvation Army logos printed on each ball. Salvation Army volunteers will sell the balls for $5 each at a number of Swangard locations throughout the game. The goal is to sell all 1,000 balls and raise $2,500 for The Salvation Army internationally, and $2,500 for The Salvation Army in BC.
The spirit of soccer encourages internationalism, sportsmanship and teamwork. These characteristics are necessary in a world where so many people are in need and these ideals are naturally translated from the soccer pitch to charity and giving.
