Vancouver Whitecaps FC have announced that defender Diaz Kambere has joined Major League Soccer side Toronto FC on a one-match loan deal.
Kambere, 22, will be available to play in Toronto FC's home game versus Chivas USA at BMO Field on Saturday afternoon. The Surrey, BC, resident - who was born in Kasese, Uganda – will return home following the MLS match in Toronto and be available for the Whitecaps USL First Division game versus Minnesota Thunder at Swangard Stadium on Sunday evening. Kambere's inclusion in Toronto FC's roster comes after the MLS club were left in need of additional players following the departure of several Toronto FC squad members to international call-ups.
Currently in his third season with the Whitecaps after signing a one-year contract – plus an option – on March 6, Kambere has made nine appearances, including eight starts, in the 2008 USL-1 campaign for total of 683 minutes. The defender also made four substitute appearances in this summer's Nutrilite Canadian Championship for a total of 116 minutes. This included two second-half appearances as a substitute against Toronto FC at BMO Field on July 1, and at Swangard Stadium on July 9.
Last March, Kambere was called up to Canada's U-23 Olympic men's team for the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament in the United States. The defender made three appearances in the tournament, including the third-place match in Nashville, Tennessee, where Canada defeated Guatemala 5-3 in a penalty shootout following a goalless 90-minute draw. Prior to the tournament, Kambere appeared for Canada U-23's in two friendly victories over Westmount College on March 4 and UC Santa Barbara on March 7.
