Martin claims weekly accolade

Vancouver Whitecaps defender Lyle Martin has been selected in the latest USL First Division Team of the Week.

The speedy right fullback makes the league's all-star XI for the third time this season, having been named to the side in Weeks Five and 19. Martin's place in the Week 22 line-up came following his assist on Charles Gbeke's winning goal on Saturday night, as the Whitecaps defeated Canadian rivals Montreal Impact 1-0 at Swangard Stadium.

Martin was one of four defenders to be chosen, with Montreal's Stefano Pesoli also named to the team for his contribution in two Impact victories last week. Puerto Rico Islanders man Cristian Arrieta and Ross Smith from Rochester Rhinos were the other defenders to be picked.

The Impact's Antonio Ribeiro was one of three midfielders in this week's team, with Kenji Treschuk from Seattle Sounders and Matt Watson from Carolina RailHawks the two other players to be selected.

Atlanta Silverbacks striker Macoumba Kandji and Montreal attacker Peter Byers joined Player of the Week Melvin Tarley from Minnesota Thunder as the weekly team's three forwards. Thunder goalkeeper Nicolas Platter completed the Week 22 line-up.
