Goal-scoring forward James visiting Vancouver this week - The Province

The Vancouver Whitecaps thought they had Marlon James this season. Now they're trying for next season.

James, the St. Vincentian forward who scored 113 times in 134 games for Kedah FA of the Malaysian Super League, was at practice Tuesday and will check out the city this week.

James -- who has expressed a strong desire to play for San Jose of MLS -- agreed to terms with Vancouver before the USL-1 roster freeze in August, but the international transfer wasn't approved because the 31-year-old played for Kedah after the signing deadline.

"[Vancouver] has always been an option," he said. "They wanted me to come over and see how it is here and it's going to help my decision for next season."

James heads to San Jose, Calif., for a week on Sunday.

"I think he would like it here, fit into the group and the way we're playing," said Whitecaps coach Teitur Thordarson.

  • Whitecaps M Martin Nash was named to the USL-1 All-League First Team on Tuesday, while F Eddie Sebrango, D Wesley Charles and D Takashi Hirano earned second team honours.
