The original 1974-1984 North American Soccer League franchise won Soccer Bowl '79 over the Tampa Bay Rowdies by an identical 2-1 score on goals by Trevor Whymark.
The USL-1 Whitecaps beat Rochester 3-0 in 2006. They were known as the Eighty-Sixers from 1987-2000 and won four-straight Canadian Soccer League titles from 1988 to 1991.
Sunday's win was only the third home victory by a Vancouver team against a non-Canadian opponent in a continental pro sports final. The B.C. Lions beat Baltimore in the 1994 Grey Cup while the Vancouver Canadians beat Oklahoma City for 1999's Pacific Coast League championship.
