Davies helps Canada U-20's to Haiti win

Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency midfielder Philippe Davies got on the scoresheet, as Canada's U-20 men's national team defeated Haiti 3-0 on Thursday.

Though it was not a fully-sanctioned international match after the Haitians used non-roster players in the match, first-half goals by Davies, Gabriel Gala, and Marcus Haber helped Canada to a convincing three-goal victory at Central Broward Regional Park in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Former Whitecaps men's team head coach Tony Fonseca included Davies and Whitecaps Residency teammate Adam Straith in his starting XI. Straith is currently on loan to Germany's Energie Cottbus U-19 Junior Bundesliga side for the 2008-09 season.

It was Davies that struck the match-winner on the quarter-hour mark, as Haiti failed to clear their lines. The Longueuil, Quebec, native was in the right place at the right time to redirect Sean Rosa's goal-bound strike into the back of the net.

On 35 minutes, Toronto FC defender/midfielder Gala doubled Canada's lead when he intercepted a poor Haitian pass back before beating two defenders and slotting the ball home from the edge of the opponent's box.

Fonseca's side then completed the scoring just before the break, as Vancouver, BC, native Marcus Haber headed home Fabrice Lassonde's cross from the left for a 3-0 halftime lead.

The young Canadians remained in command of the friendly contest after the break, with Fonseca introducing Residency defender Ethan Gage to the match just before the midway point of the second half.

Canada's U-20 side will remain in Florida until early next week, with Fonseca's squad completing their week-long training camp with a friendly versus USA U-20's on Monday.
