Potent striker Allan Ottey, a cousin of Jamaican sprint legend Merlene Ottey, has been called up to the national squad for the Caribbean zone Under-20 football finals next month.
The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) announced yesterday that Ottey and midfielder Kemal Malcolm were late additions to the training squad for the series in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) from January 9-13.
Both players were outstanding in the just-concluded local schoolboy football season, which has placed eight players in the national Under-20 squad.
Ottey was ace scorer for St James High with 25 goals, and Malcolm displayed consistent high-quality play and prolific scoring as he engineered championship success for St George’s College with a similar number of goals.
The two players, along with the other 25 players previously named, were scheduled to return to training camp yesterday. The camp will run through Wednesday, when it will break for the Christmas holiday.
The group returns to training camp on Saturday where they will remain until they depart for the tournament on Wednesday, January 7.
Meanwhile, experienced striker Dever Orgill is among three overseas-based players called up.
Orgill is currently attached to United Soccer Leagues (USL) First Division champions Vancouver Whitecaps, and US Collegiate midfielders Robert Palmer and Ramone Palmer are also invited. Robert and Ramone Palmer are both attending Park University in Parkville, Missouri.
Orgill was leading scorer for the young Reggae Boyz on their trip last month to Aruba for second round Caribbean zone qualifying.
He netted a first-half goal for the Jamaicans en route to a 4-1 victory over Antigua and Barbudain the first game of that qualifying tournament, and then hit all four goals in a 4-0 whipping of Aruba. The victories placed Jamaica atop the Group H series with maximum six points.
In their first round qualifiers in Cayman in July, the Jamaicans had also logged a 100 per cent win record, defeating Puerto Rico (1-0), Bermuda (4-0), beat Cayman (3-0).
In the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) final round, Jamaica will play alongside hosts SVG, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic in January for a spot in the CONCACAF Under-20 final round qualifiers.
The winners from the CFU final round will earn an automatic berth to the CONCACAF U20 finals in Trinidad & Tobago in March 2009, along with the hosts, Canada, Mexico, the United States, Costa Rica and El Salvador.
The final place in the eight-team CONCACAF U20 Finals will be determined in a play-off between Honduras and the Caribbean runners-up.
Four teams will qualify from for the CONCACAF Under-20 play-offs to the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Egypt from September 25 to October 16, 2009.
