'Caps and BC Soccer showcase GMSL

Vancouver Whitecaps FC, in conjunction with BC Soccer, announce a partnership to support the Girls Metro Select League (GMSL) college recruiting weekend, which will take place in Coquitlam on February 20 and in Richmond from February 21 to 22.

The Whitecaps and BC Soccer will have key development staff from both organizations on hand to run the annual showcase event, which provides an opportunity for U-17 and U-18 girls to further their soccer careers by showcasing their talents for university and college scouts.

"Our objective is to help grow girls’ and women’s soccer in BC," said GMSL chairman Steve Allen. “Both the GMSL and the Whitecaps provide key stepping stones for the best players to excel in girls’ and women’s soccer. The Whitecaps women help to create additional profile and role models for the GMSL, who in turn, act as mentors for younger girls in the grassroots club system.”

“This event demonstrates the ongoing willingness of BC Soccer and the Whitecaps to support the soccer community and player development,” said Chris Murphy, Whitecaps managing director of professional development. “By providing technical resources and leadership to our community partners, the two organizations continue to provide connectivity to soccer participants from the grassroots through the professional, provincial, and national levels of play.”

The GMSL is the elite youth soccer league in British Columbia that includes over 1,000 U-14 to U-18 girls on sixty teams over six districts. The GMSL has helped produce players for the BC Soccer provincial team program, the Canadian Soccer Association’s (CSA) national team program, and the Vancouver Whitecaps youth and senior teams. Notable players include Monica Lam-Feist (pictured above), Jodi-Ann Robinson, Sophie Schmidt, Katie Thorlakson, Brittany Timko, and Emily Zurrer.
