The Vancouver Whitecaps are on the crest of selling out the first 5,000 season ticket deposits for their inaugural Major League Soccer season in 2011.

The $50 deposits, which guarantee MLS season tickets in 2011, went on sale Friday morning.

Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi said 4,500 had been sold by yesterday morning, and he expected that the remainder of deposits would be sold by today.

“It’s been massively busy, and wonderfully so,” Lenarduzzi said.

“It’s a validation of the enthusiasm and excitement that we were feeling internally as a club.” The new franchise will cap season tickets at 16,500 seats in a reconfigured “soccer-specific” B.C. Place that seats 20,000.

Lenarduzzi said a second ticket-purchasing window will open, but only after current Whitecaps season ticketholders are given their chance at MLS season tickets.

He said a lot of people are choosing to purchase season tickets for the 2009 USL Whitecaps to ensure they are in the queue for 2011.
