Whitecaps move atop USL-1 with win over Islanders - The Canadian Press

BURNABY, B.C. — Charles Gbeke scored his first goal of the season as the Vancouver Whitecaps beat the Puerto Rico Islanders 1-0 in United Soccer Leagues First Division action Sunday.

Gbeke headed in the winning goal in the 82nd minute after Wes Knight provided the forward a left-footed cross. It was Gbeke's first competitive goal since scoring twice to lead the Whitecaps to a 2-1 win over the Islanders in the USL First Division final last October.

Jay Nolly made three saves for the clean sheet as the defending champion Whitecaps moved into first place in the league standings.

Vancouver maintained iths undefeated home record against the Islanders.

The Whitecaps were coming off Wednesday's 1-0 road loss to Toronto FC of Major League Soccer in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship.
