Charleston Battery are the new leaders of the United Soccer Leagues First Division after maintaining their undefeated record over the weekend.
The South Carolina club claimed four points out of a possible six on a two-match road stint to Austin Aztex. Puerto Rico Islanders also earned four points from six after hosting strugglers Cleveland City Stars in the Caribbean, while Montreal Impact recorded a win and a defeat during a two-match road trip to the Pacific Northwest.
The weekend action begin on Thursday, with Puerto Rico earning a 2-1 win over Cleveland after first-half goals by Cristian Arrieta and Sean Fraser. In Oregon, Portland Timbers took their unbeaten streak to eight matches, even though they left it late to defeat Montreal 1-0 at PGE Park. Keith Savage scored the decisive goal for Gavin Wilkinson's side.
The lone match on Friday was in the Texas state capital, with Canadian international Tyler Hemming assisting on goals by Darren Spicer and Matthew Bobo, as Charleston defeated Austin 2-0 at Nelson Field.
The two games on Saturday saw Rochester Rhinos draw 0-0 at home with winless Minnesota Thunder, while Cleveland gallantly came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw with the Islanders in their second match in Puerto Rico.
On Sunday, ten-man Austin earned a 1-1 draw with Charleston in the second-straight weekend match between the two clubs. Aztex substitute Jeff Harwell canceled out Kenji Treschuk's opening goal for the Battery at Nelson Field, with Austin playing a man short for 89 minutes after Michael Callahan was sent off for a heavy tackle on Charleston's Scott Buete. Meanwhile, in Vancouver, Montreal earned a measure of revenge for their two defeats to the Whitecaps in the 2009 Nutrilite Canadian Championship, as former 'Caps players Eduardo Sebrango and David Testo earned the Impact a 2-1 win at Swangard. Marcus Haber struck Vancouver's consolation goal late in the first half.
