The Vancouver Sun: 'Caps gearing up for a championship exit

Thordarson plans to field his best players
It's difficult to put your best team together when you're still auditioning potential players for your 2011 Major League Soccer roster.

But with just two games remaining in the 2010 USSF D-2 regular season, that's exactly what the playoff-bound Vancouver Whitecaps will try to do.

The Caps host the Montreal Impact on Friday and the Portland Timbers next weekend before starting their final tier-two playoff campaign. Head coach Teitur Thordarson insists he will field his absolute best team.

Impact, Whitecaps renew bitter rivalry

The Vancouver Whitecaps/Montreal Impact rivalry goes beyond intense.

The relationship has developed into something profound, fervent, impassioned and maybe even excessive.

Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos knows there’s no love lost between the Whitecaps and Impact but insists it’s a “fair-play rivalry.”

“Both teams fight hard to win but we never leave the field with bitterness,” he said. “That’s important for soccer all over the world — to have two teams that don’t like each other, that want to beat each other, but at the same time respect each other.”

Gerba flab-ulous in return to Impact -

The hottest scorer in the USSF D-2 Pro League says he's not  paid to look "pretty" or walk around with a male-model physique.

Montreal Impact forward Ali Gerba says he's paid to score goals and  he's done that in spectacular fashion lately -bagging nine goals and  one assist in his past five games.

The Province: Impact out to blow off Caps with Hurricane Joey effect -

In-form Montreal in town for another grudge match
When Montreal Impact president and owner Joey Saputo ripped into his slumping team with a tropical tantrum in mid-August, the Gazette's Randy Phillips dubbed him "Hurricane Joey."

From the outside looking in, it appears as if the cyclonic sermon has worked wonders -- four wins in five games that has Montreal back in the playoff picture and looking more like the defending USSF D-2 champions they are.

But Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos calls the post-rant revival "a coincidence."

The Province: Reserve strikers fail to impress
-
@ProvinceWeber
The Whitecaps played a reserves game at Trinity Western University on Tuesday, in large part to build up the fitness and confidence of their struggling forward group.

So, let's review.

Costa Rican sig

ning Jonathan McDonald, who appears most in need of 90 minutes work, got himself sent off 30 minutes in after he followed up a confrontation with the Spartans' goalkeeper by mouthing off the referee.

American Cody Arnoux, who spent last season with Everton's reserves and arrived here with a finisher's reputation, looked sluggish in the first half, then sailed a second-half penalty kick over the bar.

Canadian international proving Toronto critics wrong with nine goals in last  five games
The Vancouver Whitecaps have scored six goals in their last five games. Montreal Impact forward Ali Gerba has scored nine.

It's not hard to find the simple storyline for Friday night's all-Canadian clash at Swangard Stadium.

Unimpressed, underwhelming and ultimately unwanted at Toronto FC, Gerba has been reborn in Montreal, where he signed on July 15.

Playing with broken nose a Gage of desperation
-
@ProvinceWeber
Ethan Gage returns to the Whitecaps' lineup tonight, three  weeks after breaking his nose in a reserves game against the  University of B.C.

Not quite enough time for the schnoz to fully heal, but head coach  Teitur Thordarson had some sound advice for the 19-year-old from  Cochrane, Alta.

"I said to him, 'If it breaks again, just put it on again,'" said  the Icelandic boss.

His response is less about a lack of sympathy as it is about  desperation.
